ABOUT LEADERSHIP, AND THE MAN FROM NAZARETH
Many years ago, I remember a ministry where the concept of what it takes to be a "good leader" included such personal qualities as being brash, controlling, and in-your-face confrontational etc. Because the top leader was this way, the people under him also acted in the same manner. To mistreat people who erred, and to put them down and humiliate them were signs of "strength" and of "strong leadership".
It really bothered me, and I brought this up with him one time, and I still remember his answer to me: "what you call intimidation and oppressing people is actually strong leadership!"
Was he right or wrong? Now let us look at what the BIBLE says:
The two greatest leaders in the Bible were:
1. Moses in the Old Testament.
2. Jesus in the New Testament.
About Moses, the Bible says in Numbers 12:3 "Now the man Moses was very humble, more than any man who was on the face of the earth".
About Jesus, the Bible says in Jesus's own words in Matthew 11:29, "Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart".
In other words, the two greatest men in the Bible were also the humblest and meekest men on earth.
They were bold as lions when they stood under the anointing and spoke the Word of God, but in their character and person they were meek and humble men.
Let us remember this, as we step into leadership roles ourselves, let us remember that we follow a Man who took a towel and a basin of water and washed the feet of His disciples, and then went to the cross and laid down His life for them.
In my eyes, the best school of leadership is not found in following the teachings of today's 'leadership gurus', but it is foremost about modeling one's life after Jesus of Nazareth, about following Him and about striving to be like Him in every way.
He called us by saying "follow me", and that I will do. I will follow Him, learn from Him, and I will learn from any man who also follows Him with at least the same passion as I do, and whose books and teachings are full of examples from the life and the walk of the humble Man from Nazareth.
