THE NEED FOR THEOLOGY
The word "theology" means "the study of the nature of God," and this study is done solely through the study of the Word of God, the Bible.
Not through personal experiences or "revelations," but through the study of the Bible alone.
On a couple of occasions, I have heard ministers say something like, "I don't know or care much for the theology of this thing, but I know the spirit of God; and this is how the spirit moves ...."
Sorry, my friend, you got it all wrong! You are skating on thin ice. You better know what the Word of God says about whatever is happening in your meetings, because it is of God only if it lines up with the Word of God. If it does not line up with the Word of God, then lay it aside.
We do need the Word and the Spirit of God working together in our lives and in our churches but let us ever be mindful of this that the Spirit of God will never move in a manner that is not in line with the Word of God. In fact, it is by the Word of God alone that we can test and tell whether something is genuinely of the Holy Spirit.
So never despise "theology." It is the knowledge of God and of His ways through the Bible. Let us be lifelong students and followers of the Word of God. It is the ONLY standard of TRUTH, and it separates the Spirit from the flesh and from the flaky. It is the only thing that can tell us that we are truly on track with the moving of the Spirit of God.
